“The Simpsons” weigh in

September 12, 2008 | Illinois, industry, local issues, media coverage, regulation, states | Comments (1)

Or at least this seems like an episode of “The Simpsons” as it originates in Springfield.   In this episode, Homer and Bart push tighter restrictions on payday lenders than there are on sexual predators:

The city prohibits registered sexual predators from living within 1,000 feet of each other. Under a change to the zoning code scheduled for a Tuesday city council vote, payday lenders in Springfield would have to be at least 1,500 feet apart.

That doesn’t mean backers of the measure dislike payday lenders more than sex offenders. The problem is that the lenders make their presence too obvious, said Michelle Higginbotham, vice chairman of the MacArthur Boulevard Business Association.

Some days the Payday Pundit loses faith in democracy.
