I wish these so-called consumer groups (and the government) would keep their noses out of the lending business. What ever happened to the free market.

the wording of this bulletin looks as though it came from the Toledo Diocese who are attempting deflect any negative attention (priest murder, priest sexual abuse) off of themselves.

i am not catholic, nor is my wife, however she works for the Toledo Diocese and they have made her sit through demeaning workshops called "bridges out of poverty" that compare those of us in the payday loan industry to drug dealers and organized crime. no joke!

it's called "wag the dog"

my church is (in my opinion) doing the right thing by not taking a stance at all, or maybe they are, my minister has simply told me that what people do is their own business.

I think Aurthur will benefit financially from us closing, there for no other terms mater to him. He isnt about teaching people ways to get out of debt, he is into taking away options that help them in a time of need. This way they have more over draft and NSF charges. WAIT HE'S A BANKER!!!! great way to boost the economy banker, great way to keep these people paying your extra bank charges. If he would go to China, I think they would turn him out and his true colors would shine!

It is welfare enhancing, because that minority of payday loan customers either 1) had an emergency need for funds so critical, at one or more times, that it made the fees of the multiple loans a welfare-enhancing proposition, or 2) simply needed to learn from the school of hard knocks not to borrow irresponsibly, just as many people need to learn from the sickness they develop from eating too many desserts not to make that mistake. Do you want the government to place a cap on the amount of fat and sugar allowed in ice cream? Are ice cream manufacturers "preying" on the weakness of lonely people who seek solace in their oh-so-tempting product? Maybe every time you buy ice cream, Arthur, it should go into a database which the grocery should be required to check before they are allowed to sell it to you. If you make yourself sick and don't have insurance our tax dollars will have to pay for your care. And by the way, do you do any nonessential driving? Think how many problems would be alleviated if gas stations weren't allowed to tempt people to spend more than they can afford on gas...

Go to China, Arthur, you'd probably be happier there.

Access to Credit Means Access to the American Dream

Yes, with that payday loan I'll be able to buy me a house.

Once upon a time access to the American Dream also required people to save first and delay gratification. Lenders would only let you borrow money if your credit was good and they assessed your ability to repay.

But then came financial deregulation and saving became old fashioned. So did delayed gratification. We were allowed to buy the American Dream even if our credit was lousy and we couldn't afford the price. Lenders stopped asking us to document our capacity to repay. They just charged a premium for not asking.

The bubble grew and grew, then it burst. It turns out that we couldn't defy the laws of gravity forever.

People figured out all over again why almost every society that has ever existed constrains credit transactions. Experience taught those societies that without limits, bubbles form, debt peons multiply, and creditors take advantage of people who are short sighted and desperate.
