Gov Strickland hears from “activist community”

May 28, 2008 | Uncategorized | Comments (3)

Progress Ohio (the organization who lobbyied to ban payday lending in Ohio) is ”compiling comments from the activist community to share with Governor Strickland before the signing ceremony.”

We think Governor Strickland needs to hear from more than the “activist community” before the signing ceremony.  He needs to hear from the hard-working people of Ohio who will be negatively impacted by the flawed legislation to ban payday lending.

Dear Progress Ohio and Coalition for Responsible Lending Team and Governor Strickland–

Thank you for thinking your job matters more than any of the others here in Ohio. Thank you for sitting in your comfortable office and voicing your irresponsible, unsubstantiated opinions about what happens to 6000 jobs. It’s so easy to sit somewhere else and weigh in on an issue that doesn’t directly impact or affect YOUR life.

Did you know that HB 545 will INCREASE the Ohio deficit by 272 MILLION DOLLARS? Our current deficit is 60+ MILLION DOLLARS— that’s not much in the way of governing sensibly or dutifully is it? Nor is it fiscally responsible on any level. Not much in the way of “PROGRESS” or “RESPONSIBILITY”

Do you realize that there are over 40 million Americans who are literally on the brink of financial disaster? Do you know that if we limit their financial options, many, many more will then file bankruptcy and/or turn to illegal methods? (You may want to check out Georgia and North Carolina’s ban on payday lending and how it didn’t quite work out the way that they anticipated)

Do you know that Ohio already has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country? Are you aware of the high unemployment rate we currently have here in Ohio?

Are you an adult? Do you weigh and make your own financial decisions? How would you feel if the government attempted to regulate what credit cards or banking institutions you may use? Or how much your limit should be? Or whether or not you should be “protected from yourself” when making financial options?

Responsible accountable adults do not to be “rescued or saved” from themselves. Responsible accountable adults make informed decisions—they weigh their options, they read agreements/contracts and make decisions based on what is the best option for THEM.

But since you don’t agree…..why don’t we apply this flawed “logic” to cars, fast food/pizza, alcohol, housing, cigarettes, credit cards, mortgages and go ahead and ban all these products — simply because a few have proven they can’t handle it. Let’s punish ALL OF US by restricting our rights, since some are not responsible adults…..

I’ve never had a ticket in 21 yrs of driving, but others have had MANY and accidents too—so let’s ban all driving since some Ohioans have “demonstrated that they can’t handle” driving responsibly

I’m not an alcoholic, but some Ohioans are, so let’s ban all Alcohol since some Ohioans have “demonstrated they can’t handle” alcohol responsibly

I’m not a fast food junkie, but some Ohioans are, so let’s ban McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, etc b/c some Ohioans have “demonstrated they can’t handle” fast food responsibly b/c they are overweight

You have truly reached a new all time low to suggest Ohioans need to have their finances monitored by the Ohio General Assembly.

***Have you ever visited and ventured into a payday advance store? An informed speaker/writer/advocate has a duty and obligation to research both sides of a story, so I would hope you have already done so. In the event that you haven’t, might I suggest that you visit a Cashland/Cash America store in Ohio and experience firsthand what we’re all about. Speak to our employees, see our stores- I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Talk to the customers that come in to loan with us, listen to them, hear their stories and struggles- learn why they use our services (medical emergencies, to supplement their earnings for gas, food, utilities, clothes, car repairs)—by doing this you will educate yourself on the Payday Industry and hear what the Ohio consumers want>> the capability to make free will informed financial decisions for themselves.****

HB 545 will cause a tremendous NEGATIVE impact on the already shaky Ohio economy!!

HB 545 is NOT “PROGRESS OR RESPONSIBLE”!

Sincerely,
Casey Maloney

I wish the Governor and his friends, (Widener, Husted, etc) would spend half a day in my payday loan office. I would like for them to stand before my customers, face to face, and tell them why they don’t deserve to have this credit option extended to them.

I want them to speak to the customers who are standing before me, frightened, crying, trying to figure out what they will do when this option is taken from them.

I want them to tell my staff, to their faces, what they say about them publicly and privately. I want them to tell my staff how they are going to help them when they no longer have a job.

I feel that if they can sit in their comfy offices surrounded by their followers and make legislation that will throw tens of thousands of consumers into financial turmoil while destroying the futures of so many employees, they should at least have the courage to speak directly to those who will be “wiped out” with the stroke of a pen.

Telling the press that “some people don’t deserve credit..” and “affected employees can find other jobs..” is not only rude but also cowardly, in my opinion.

Will any of them have the courage to meet with us directly and say these things to us?
