The House Financial Services Committee penciled in a Sept. 23 vote on legislation that would establish the Consumer Financial Protection Agency, sources said. The agency would oversee credit cards, mortgages and other financial products that target consumers. The banking industry and many lawmakers raised concerns that consumers might actually have a more difficult time obtaining credit after the creation of such an agency. Others said it is a vital step to prevent another housing bubble and other issues. Wall Street Journal, The (09/01)
