This will certainly solve the problem of unbanked seniors using check cashers to cash their social security checks. From the article:
Residents now can begin signing up for the card, according to a U.S. Department of Treasury. Information about the card has been attached to all Social Security checks this month. Lancaster resident and Social Security recipient Jane Gard plans to be one of the first people in line to apply for the card.
“I hate checks, and I can’t balance a checkbook well at all,” Gard said.
We don’t see how the debit card solves budget issues, but it’s nice to see the federal government adapting to the times.
