The First Amendment

March 19, 2010 | federal legislation, industry | Comments (0)

Here’s what it says (my bolding):

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The Supreme Courts says that the bolded part constitutionally protects lobbying.    Nevertheless, day in and  day out, the media trots out stories about industry lobbying in an attempt to imply that it’s somewhat unethical for industry to defend itself.  This Washington Post story about the American Bankers Association organizing a lobbying effort is the latest example.
