Two thumbs down for “Easy Money”

The CW Network’s drama about a family in the payday lending business is boring, inaccurate, and incomprehensible.    Not only do they get the whole payday lending model wrong–one character borrows $2000 and owes $5000–they portray thuggish collection practices and a cast of customers that is far from reality.

We predict the show will get a small audience and be off after one season.

Characters are “thin.”  From the review:

But the writing isn’t quite as crisp as you expect from a cable series (there are a lot of scenes that are supposed to be funny but don’t quite click, like the nouveau riche Buffkin clan sitting down for a fancy meal of fried chicken in a bucket), and the characters feel pretty thin so far.

It’s a more complex show than you would expect on the CW – particularly now that the CW, which has never had any kind of success on Sundays, has subcontracted the night out to independent production company Media Rights Capital – and maybe it lives up to its potential down the road, but right now potential is all it is.
