Dem AGs back CFPA

February 9, 2010 | federal legislation, industry | Comments (0)

From the story:

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller urged the adoption of an independent financial consumer protection agency as part of federal financial industry reform, a point on which a measure in the U.S. Senate has been stuck.

“There are two sides here. There’s the public side, protecting the public. And then there are the big banks, protecting them in a way I don’t think they should be protected,” Miller said during a morning conference call with reporters. “Senators have to ask themselves: Am I on the side of the public or am I on the side of the big banks?”

Miller was joined by attorneys general from Connecticut, Illinois and Ohio, all Democrats.

AGs should be protecting the rights of their states to enact their own consumer protection laws.
