Desperate banks giving away iPods

August 21, 2008 | alternatives, customers, industry, personal finance | Comments (0)

Just open a bank account.  From the Columbus Dispatch

“Back in the day when a toaster was the giveaway, customers had to just open a checking account,” McBride said. “But now, with high-end giveaways, customers have to have multiple products, which increases the likelihood that the customer relationship with the bank will sustain.”

For example, the iPod giveaway at Key Bank requires consumers to sign up for a checking account by Aug. 29 and make one debit card transaction and a combination of two direct-deposits or automated payments each of $100 or more by Nov. 14 in order to qualify, the bank said.

The Payday Pundit opened an account at a credit union 25 years ago and got nothing.  If we knew of a bank  giving away toasters, we would have definitely chose them.   Even today, we would choose a toaster over an IPod.
