Quotes from Senators who voted to ban payday lending in Ohio

May 14th, 2008 · 3 Comments

  • Despite her stated concern for the people struggling economically in her district with gas and food prices, Senator Teresa Fedor cast her vote to shut down payday lenders.
  • Senator Timothy Grendell says he “hopes not to eliminate jobs,” then voted to shut down payday lenders. The example used during his speech demonstrated his ignorance of short-term credit.
  • Senator Robert Spada voted to ban payday lending, but “not because he wants to see anyone lose their job.”
  • In a long and eloquent speach, Senator Capri Cafaro said she recognized the “the implications that this has, both for the consumers and the industry.” She expressed her opposition to government setting limits on the number of loans and her fervent support for “personal choice and individual freedoms.” Yet, she cast her vote to ban payday lending.

Full roll call to come shortly.

Come walk in the shoes of our customers. Walk in the shoes of the employees. Walk in the shoes of the business owners. Before voting for this legislation it would have been nice for you to see things from our perspective and not just listen to the Coalitions who are funded by the banks! Shame on you all for voting against the people of Ohio for the sake of furthering your polical careers.

My email to the Senators after it was passed:

    Dear Senators:

Thank you for putting 6000+ Ohioans out of jobs.

Thank you for voting for a $272 million LOSS for Ohio .

Thank you for not bothering to educate yourself on the Payday Industry.

Thank you for succumbing to political pressure.

Thank you for voting with your counterparts as opposed to thinking for yourself. Especially those Senators that had previously said they favored the Veto of HB 545.

Thank you for making MY financial decisions for me.

Thank you for limiting my financial options and all Ohioans’ options.

Thank you for “rescuing and protecting” those adults who are financially irresponsible.

Thank you for agreeing to wreak havoc on the Ohio economy.

Thank you for not seeing or caring about the “big” picture.

Thank you for being so completely out of touch with your constituents—their needs, desires, and opinions.

Thank you for reminding me why politicians get such a bad rap— you have certainly proven why over the past few weeks over and over again.

And oh before I forget—-thank you for voting to lay me off from a job I love. I really appreciate your thoughtlessness…..

To the 4 Senators (Seitz, Schuler, Mumper, Buehrer)) that voted with the state of Ohio in mind and all of the people in the districts they represent— I APPLAUD YOU!!!

I admire your ability to see through the “typical political rhetoric” and do the right thing.

Today, I am truly sad and disappointed that I live in the state of Ohio .
